[ARCHIVED] Call for Volunteers Begins for Tour of Utah Professional Cycling Stage Race

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (April 4, 2013) - Volunteer registration launches today for the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah professional cycling stage race. Close to 2,000 volunteer positions in a variety of roles and locations are available during race week, August 6-11. This year, "America's Toughest Stage Race™ begins in southern Utah for the first time, traveling from the Stage One overall start in Brian Head to the Stage Six overall finish in Park City. The volunteer application is available online at the official web site, tourofutah.com.
Volunteering is the best way to guarantee a commemorative Tour of Utah T-shirt. This year, the Tour will thank volunteers with additional merchandise which includes a collapsible lunch tote, water bottle, and sun protection products from NAAWK. Based in Salt Lake City, NAAWK is the Official Sun Care Company of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and will provide lip balm and sunscreen for all race week volunteers.
Individuals, as well as service groups and clubs, are encouraged to provide their time and expertise for one or multiple days during race week. Volunteers will not only receive the personal satisfaction of helping make this internationally-sanctioned state race a success, but they will also gain a unique, behind-the-scenes perspective into what it takes to put on a major sporting event. The Utah Sports Commission is assisting the Tour with volunteer coordination.
"The Utah Sports Commission views willing volunteers as an event's most valuable resource and Utah's well-trained volunteer force has been a key factor in attracting top national and international sporting events to the state," said Jeff Robbins, president & CEO of the Utah Sports Commission.
While course marshal positions are the strongest need, additional support will be needed with the
Lifestyle Expo presented by Geigerrig, hospitality program, and Team Presentation event, which will
kick off race week on August 5 in Cedar City. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, and are required to sign a waiver. Individuals are asked to designate the start or finish line areas that are preferred for each volunteer position. The 2013 host cities and venues are Cedar City, Brian Head, Panguitch, Torrey, Richfield, Payson, Salt Lake City, Snowbasin Resort, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort, and Park City.
The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah continues to be free to all spectators, making professional cycling one of the most unique pro sports in the world today. For more information about the volunteer program for 2013, interested individuals and group leaders may contact Cristina Miller at volunteer@tourofutah.com.
