Held in May, this annual track meet is open to youth ages 9 to
14. Participate in several track events, from the 50 meter dash
to the mile run, as well as the softball throw and the standing
long jump. Winners may qualify for a trip to the national finals
held in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Plant a tree for Arbor Day! This 100 year old tradition takes
place in April, when thousands of children all over the country
join with their friends and schools to plant trees. During the short
Arbor Day program, Arbor Day history is presented, the year’s
poster contest winners from area elementary schools are announced,
the ‘official’ Arbor Day tree is planted, and park representatives
are available to answer your questions about tree care and maintenance
in this area.
The first Saturday in June is Trails Day. All across America, people
gather to celebrate Trails Day, our only national trails celebration.
Cedar City Parks and Recreation sponsors a 5K run on Cedar City’s
trail, winding through West Canyon Park and up the tree-lined path
through the canyon. Prizes and drawings are just part of this fun
celebration.
Held in September, this football skills competition is open to
youth ages 8 to 15. Competitors punt, pass and kick a football in
a test of distance and accuracy. Winners can advance to the National
Finals, held during an NFL playoff game in January.
Held in April or May, this baseball skills competition is open to youth
8 to 15. Batting, base running and fielding are tested for distance
and accuracy. Winners advance to the sectional competition at Franklin
Quest Field in Salt Lake City. Winners have the opportunity to further
advance to the Team Competition.
